Debris
-
Asian Dub Foundation's "Debris" song from 1995 speaks on the context of displaced populations all living in England, the Empire that abused their original lands and then used their labor to build up their own Empire. The debris is a reference to what they left in Africa and Asia after coming to steal resources and wreck havoc. They also make a reference to the invention of this "third world" concept by the very Empire that colonized these very areas. It's making allusion to the depth of the violence and manipulation and greed. "Famine was caused not by god but taxation", because it makes absolutely no sense that the most naturally rich lands have populations living famine, on top of the fact there's enough food on the planet for everyone. It's the distribution of wealth that is unequal. It's capitalism through the history of Empire. This song is conveying the truth, putting power to words to bring to light the pain and ugliness of the true history.
