Point system
-
I found the Canadian point system described in the Muhammedi reading fascinating. Although discriminatory, its much less subjective than previous forms of application for immigration. For one it is much less discriminatory based on race. The immigrant is no longer fully left to the subjective mercy of the immigration officer. Having experienced the immigration process in america I can attest to the terrifying nature of having someone future rests solely on the shoulders of a stranger. The point system at least gave guidance and precedent, even if the final word remained with the immigration officer. Its annihilation of quotas was also beneficial to non-white immigrants as they had heavily discriminated against immigrants from developing countries throughout the early 20th century.
Yet the point system was still discriminatory, especially in terms of social status. It fostered an elitist mindset and maintained the standard of the model minority. The point system pretends to be based on merit, but fails to recognize that much of what they judged as merit was really a reflection of the privilege immigrants had access to in their past lives. It is also very impersonal to quantify a persons life and achievements into a grade.
Overall, I still think the point system was still a positive change for Canada’s immigration process After listening to fortress Europe i also think the association of banging on the walls applies to Canada, but in this case the walls have opened slightly.
