Amir Sulaiman's Danger
-
I'm a HUGE Def Poetry fan. Thank you so much for including this.
Watched them growing up, and I definitely remember this one. It resonates even more now. Chills.
I love that he embodies what he's saying; ten toes down on every breath and word. It's so real.
TRUTH. Poetry, rhythm that's where emotion can truly shine. Essays can't fully take on their own life. I really appreciate you including songs and in this case spoken word each week. It brings the topic to life for me.
So much talk about justice these days, but freedom fighters never get their just respect. That poet is one of them. People want truth until it's at their doorstep. Then they're like nah..I rather something lighter, more digestible.
I can't relate. The intensity I feel on a daily won't let me."So what can they do with a cat with a heart like Turner
A mind like Douglass
A mouth like Malcolm?"
Just this alone..."I’m a teenage Palestinian
Opening fire at an Israeli checkpoint, point blank, check-mate, now what?!
I’m a rape victim with a gun cocked to his cock, cock BANG! Bangkok! Now what?!"It's so refreshing, comforting even, validating, like a hug telling me I'm not crazy when I witness people express in a raw way. No filters, no political correctness, no white-washing.
This is it. This it IT.
"But we must learn, know, write, read
We must kick, bite, yell, scream
We must pray, fast, live, dream, fight, kill and die free!"VISCERAL TRUTH. MASHALLAH.
Salaam to Akhi Amir Sulaiman.
