How am I supposed to take Canadian politics seriously when Makenzie King is there?

Ward's chapter in White Canada Forever recounts certain obstacles purposely placed to challenge limit East Indian and Asian immigrants in Canada. The migration of East Indians and East Asians to Canada in the early 1900s was unfortunately met with a lot of resistance from while folk. Furthermore, as sojourners/temporary residents, East Indians did not feel the need to assimilate, and this would bring even more discontent to the white population in British Columbia/the West. While I was already fully aware of the restrictions and acts established, like the Chinese Head Tax of 1885, I was not expecting such ridiculous, and frankly stupid, reasonings like that of Mackenzie King. To claim that people do not deserve to immigrate to Canada because of the assumption that they come from topical/sub-tropical climates made me laugh at first, because WOW! what an argument. That quick laugh was quickly stifled as I remembered that these people are in a position of so much privilege and power, and so their foolish and ignorant reasonings are taken with seriousness. Moreover, the argument and stereotype that East Indians and Asians are dirty truly makes my eyes roll to the back of my head. The people who are making up these stereotypes are the same people who brought disease to the countries they colonized. Their very own monarchs could not even touch a bathtub (King James I notoriously had rooms infested with lice) , and yet it is the migrants that are dirty? Sure... Ward's work reminded me of the intolerant, ignorant and ridiculous rhetoric that white settlers, and Eurocentric governments have. Their absurd beliefs shape the core of laws, acts and policies. This demonstrates an insane and unfair amount of privilege that unfortunately is still visible today.
